Day nursery, pre-school or childminder?

The differences between day nurseries, pre-schools and playgroups, and childminders in England, and how to choose.

All of these are registered with and inspected by Ofsted, follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), and can offer funded hours.

Day nurseries

Usually open all day, all year (around 7:30am to 6pm), often from a few months old to school age, with children grouped by age in different rooms.

Pre-schools and playgroups

Often open in term time only, for shorter sessions, mostly for children aged 2 to 4. Many are run by charities or parent committees, and some are attached to schools.

Childminders

Look after a small group of children in their own home, often with flexible hours and mixed ages, including school pick-ups. Groups are smaller, which some children find easier.

How to choose

Think about the hours you need, your child’s age and temperament, and the journey. Search near you and use our visit checklist.
