Review guidelines

Reviews on NurseryHop come from parents and carers, for parents and carers. Here’s who can write one, what we publish, and how we keep reviews honest.

Who can write a review

  • Parents and carers of children who go to the nursery now, or went there in the last few years.
  • Parents who visited or had a settling-in session but didn’t take a place. We label these reviews so other parents can tell.
  • One review per nursery per person. You confirm your email address before we look at it.
  • Nursery staff, owners, their family and friends, and competitors can’t review the nursery.

What makes a good review

  • Your own first-hand experience: staff, settling in, activities, food, communication, how your child got on, value for money.
  • Fair and factual, even when it’s critical. Honest negative reviews are published.
  • Written for other parents, in your own words.

What we don’t publish

  • Children’s names, photos or anything that could identify a child, and staff surnames.
  • Addresses, phone numbers, email addresses or other private details.
  • Swearing, abuse, discrimination, threats, or allegations of crimes. If you think a child is at risk, don’t write a review. Contact your local council’s children’s services or the police on 101, or call 999 if a child is in immediate danger. For other complaints, see how to complain about childcare (Ofsted: 0300 123 4666).
  • Reviews written in return for a discount, gift or other reward, or reviews the nursery asked staff, friends or family to write.
  • Adverts, links, spam, or reviews about a different nursery.

How we check reviews

Every review is read by a person before it goes live, usually within 2 working days. We confirm the reviewer’s email address, run automatic checks for things like contact details and offensive language, and look for signs of fake reviews, such as several reviews from the same network. We don’t publish reviews we think are fake, and we don’t take money to publish, hide or reorder reviews. A nursery’s plan with us makes no difference to its reviews.

Nurseries

Nurseries can’t edit or remove reviews. On a paid plan they can reply publicly under a review. Any nursery can report a review it thinks breaks these guidelines, and we’ll check it. Nurseries are welcome to invite all their families to review them, for example with their review link or QR cards, but mustn’t offer rewards or only ask the families they expect to be happy.

Ratings

A nursery’s star rating is the average of its published reviews. It’s parents’ opinion and is shown separately from Ofsted’s inspection results, which we never change.
